The Jaunt is a new project that is all about travelling, inspiration and creating art.
The Jaunt send artists on short trips with the aim of helping the artists to find new inspiration in the new environment. The artist returns from the trip and creates an exclusive screen print, which goes on sale on thejaunt.net.
To make the concept even more interesting, the print is sold sight unseen – you only know which artist went to which location. Once all of the prints are sold, The Jaunt finally share what the daring buyers will receive.
The first artist the team shipped off to a foreign land was Hedof, from The Netherlands – a friend of ours since he created the first design for our graffiti t-shirt line.
The Jaunt sent Hedof to Helsinki, Finland – the capital city named “World Design Capital” in 2012. Here is what he thought:
The thing that impressed me the most was the overall atmosphere of the city itself. Helsinki is build on a cold, rough area of rocks, small islands and forests. It was hard to believe people can build such a beautiful city on a location that rough. The combination of colorful and magical architecture in raw nature attracts me a lot as an image-maker.
The most surprising to me was the high level of design you see in the city. Everything looked stylish and well-designed and I entered several places like a hair salon or garden centre by mistake because I thought it was a design shop. I was confident Helsinki would be inspiring enough for me to create a nice design for the print but eventually I had enough (useful) drawings and photos for 3 or 4 more prints! In four days I took more photos than in one week of New York a month earlier.
